Global Studies Scholars Explore Conversations that Matter

By Ms. Jenise Boland, Social Studies Teacher

Fresh from their immersive multiday trip to Seattle, where they explored key themes in STEM, entrepreneurship, and international relations at the Gates Foundation, the Global Studies Scholars have transitioned to their Conversations That Matter unit. This segment of the program emphasizes honing communication skills across a variety of contexts, from legal and academic to business and media. Scholars are learning firsthand how effective interviewing can shape global conversations and outcomes.

The first expert to join the cohort was Ms. Leanne Schultz, Director of Human Resources at WPGA. Ms. Schultz led a dynamic workshop and shared how strategic HR practices can foster an organizational culture that not only drives success but also values and amplifies each employee's contributions. Her insights on managing talent and aligning people with purpose provided the scholars with a foundational understanding of how HR influences the wider business world.

This week, the scholars took their learning on the road again with a visit to Corus! broadcast studio, where they engaged with the marketing team, program director, and Rock 101 producer/host Robin LaRose to explore the art of storytelling through interviews. With 40 years' experience interviewing rock legends such as ACDC, Led Zeppelin, and Fleetwood Mac, Mr. LaRose shared memorable clips from his career and offered invaluable tips on how to engage diverse audiences and conduct interviews with high-profile figures.

The visit also included a special talk from RC Weslowski, a multi-award-winning author, playwright and spoken word poet. He captivated the scholars with a quick yet impactful introduction on blending spoken word with music, providing them with tools to enhance their communication and storytelling techniques.

With these enriching experiences, the Global Studies Scholars are preparing for the upcoming Global Studies Symposium in December, when they will put their newly acquired communication skills to the test.
