Nila Imbrahimi '25 Awarded International Children's Peace Prize in Amsterdam

We are so proud to share that, from 165 nominees across 47 countries, Nila Imbrahimi ’25 is the recipient of the prestigious International Children’s Peace Prize by KidsRights, an international nongovernmental organization that advocates for children’s rights globally and recognizes young changemakers. Past prize winners include Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai. Nila received the award on November 19 in Amsterdam from Yemeni Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman for her courageous work advocating for women’s and girls’ rights in her native Afghanistan, both before the Taliban takeover – when, at only 13 years old, she initiated a government overturn of a ban on girls singing in public – and after the Taliban rule of her country, which she fled in 2021 with the help of 30 Birds Foundation, of which Nila is now a Global Ambassador and who nominated Nila for this award.

Finding refuge first in Pakistan and then Saskatoon, Nila appealed to WPGA in 2023 to enrol for her grades 11 and 12 years. She and her family settled in Vancouver last year with the support of our community. Nila has continued her advocacy work, founding HerStory, an organization that celebrates Afghan women’s achievements and champions their rights, particularly relating to education, which the Taliban has heavily restricted, preventing teen girls from attending school. When women are in public, they must be fully covered, cannot speak, and must be accompanied by a male relative.

In May 2023, Nila delivered a compelling speech at the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy, where she outlined in vivid detail the day her life changed – and the months following the fall of Kabul (click here for the transcript). Nila has also presented at the UK House of Lords, Canadian Women for Women of Afghanistan Montreal Summit, and TED Conference Vancouver.

She will graduate from WPGA in June and is thinking of eventually pursuing a career in law. She also wants to dedicate more time to HerStory, and welcomes support from members of the WPGA community who could offer advice and guidance for the charitable framework.
