This week our 20th Century World History class attended the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre's (VHEC) Holocaust Symposium at UBC. The event featured insightful presentations by Chris Friedrichs, Professor Emeritus of History; Mariette Doduck, Holocaust survivor; Dr. Lauren Faulkner Rossi, Associate Professor of History; and Dan Schubert, filmmaker.
Students were moved by the personal stories and expert analyses, which brought history to life. Particularly impactful was Dr. Rossi's collaboration with Mariette Doduck to highlight her story. The symposium included two film presentations and concluded with a commemorative candle lighting. WPGA students were especially impressive during the Q&A session with their thoughtful questions.
We are grateful to the VHEC and the speakers for this enriching educational experience that has left a lasting impact on our students.
Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
