Community Traditions

At West Point Grey Academy, tradition is at the heart of our community, fostering connection, pride, and lifelong memories. From our spirited House System, where students come together in friendly competition, to the cherished Grad Walk that celebrates each graduating class, these moments weave a shared story of belonging and joy.

Our traditions bring us together throughout the year—whether it’s cheering alongside Wally the Wolf on Sports Day, celebrating culture and diversity during Lunar New Year, or strengthening bonds at events like the Buddy Breakfast.

These traditions, big and small, are the cornerstone of life at WPGA, connecting students, families, staff, and alumni across generations. Together we celebrate vibrant community—past, present and future. 

WPGA HOUSE SYSTEM

Every student, teacher, staff member, parent and alumni at WPGA belongs to a school house. School houses build spirit and provide friendly competition, making Sports Day and other school events even more fun!  If a parent is an alumni or if a sibling is already at the school, the student will be assigned to the family’s house.  Upon enrolment, each student is assigned one of four Houses:

    • Hemlock

    • Cypress

    • Grouse

    • Seymour

  • Alumni/Staff Basketball Game

    A friendly yet spirited showdown where alumni and staff compete on the court, celebrating camaraderie and the lasting connections within the WPGA community.

  • Buddy Program

    A special program that pairs younger and older students, fostering mentorship, friendship, and school spirit through shared activities and events like the beloved Buddy Breakfast.

  • Grad Walk

    A heartfelt tradition where graduates walk through the Junior School Hallways one final time, cheered on by younger students and staff, symbolizing the journey and legacy of their time at WPGA.

  • Wolf TV - Term End Production

    A student-run broadcasting initiative. At the end of each term, students produce a comprehensive Term End Production, showcasing their skills in video production, editing, and storytelling.

  • Lunar New Year

    A vibrant celebration of culture and tradition, featuring performances, decorations, and festivities that honor the Lunar New Year and our diverse community.

  • Welcome Back Celebration

    A joyful start to the school year where students, families, and staff reconnect and celebrate the WPGA community spirit.

  • Santa's Breakfast

    A festive holiday gathering where families enjoy breakfast, seasonal activities, and a visit from Santa, bringing joy and togetherness to the WPGA community.

  • Toonie Sale

    A fun and purposeful event where items find new homes, encouraging sustainability and raising funds for community initiatives.

  • Open Mic Night

    A lively evening where senior school students showcase their musical, spoken word, and creative talents in a supportive and inspiring atmosphere.

Wally the Wolf 

Wally the Wolf is WPGA's beloved mascot and a symbol of school spirit and pride. Known for his boundless energy and enthusiasm, Wally can always be found cheering on students at assemblies, athletic games, and events such as Sports Day. Wally infuses joy and belonging into our community and encourages fair play and teamwork. We love Wally at WPGA!

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
