30 Years of Purpose and Progress
From 1996 to Today: A School Shaped by Vision and Community

We opened in September 1996 with a plan for 150 students. Thanks to extraordinary community momentum, we welcomed 325 learners the first day of school. Headmaster Clive Austin assembled a start-up team of 24 teachers and staff. By 2001, the “little school with a big vision” had grown to a full JK-12 program, with our first graduating class.

In 2026, what began as a lofty dream by a courageous group of friends has become a place of extraordinary learning, friendship, and care for our communities. To everyone who paved the way, thank you. Your vision and generosity turned early promise into the most remarkable reality. To our current families, your belief and partnership are shaping the next chapter of West Point Grey Academy.

30 Year Spotlight

No school becomes extraordinary on its own. WPGA’s story is woven from the voices of the people who built it, lived it, and continue to shape it. In this special anniversary series, we highlight founding and longserving teachers and staff whose stories reflect the values, heart, and evolution of our community. Keep checking back for more profiles!

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
