Kate Mackay (SS)
Kate has been working in K-12 education for 13 years. This is her eighth year at West Point Grey Academy, and her third as a counsellor in the Senior School. Kate graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Master of Education in Counselling Psychology and is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC).
Kate started her career in the elementary classroom, teaching grades 1 through 3 for 10 years before deciding to pivot to counselling. Since completing her masters, Kate has been working at WPGA as well as in private practice. In her private practice work, she works with both adolescents and adults.
Kate is a relationally centered counsellor who meets students with warmth, understanding, and compassion. She draws from the theories of person-centered counselling and emotion focused therapy (EFT) as well as focusing. With a trauma-informed approach, she hopes to support students in developing a stronger relationship with themselves.
At WPGA, Kate supports students’ transition from grade 7 to grade 8 as the school’s Grade 8 Transition Coordinator and an advisor to grade 8 for the Peaks Advisory Program. Kate develops and teaches social-emotional learning lessons that foster students' awareness of their emotional experience while giving them strategies to manage the twists and turns of adolescence. Additionally, she works alongside teachers and parents, helping them understand this complex stage of development so they can better support the teens in their lives.
