Coding Creations at ISABC Robotics Scrimmage

By Ms. Nancy Tseng, Coding Creations, and Mr. Matthew Mah, Junior School Educational Technology Director

Three Billy Goats Gruff are stuck! They need to cross lava fields using a rickety bridge, push a troll into water, and carry their brother to safety in as little time as possible. Can you build a robot and code a way to help our goat friends?

Our Coding Creations 7 class were up to the challenge on Monday, January 27 at the ISABC Robotics Scrimmage hosted by Urban Academy. Six schools gathered with their robots anxious to tackle the mystery design challenge. Once the Three Billy Goats Gruff challenge was introduced, the team of Thomas, Claire, Cyrus, Reese, Lucas and Leon quickly surveyed the options and calculated optimal pathways for maximum efficiency.

Crossing the bridge garnered massive points but a large obstacle and lava fields were in the way; careful programming and testing was needed to ensure no penalties. Entering the safety end zone quickly sacrificed challenge points but garnered bonus time points. Teamwork and communication were keys to successful plans as our teams prototyped new bot designs on the fly and tested multiple code iterations, making small adjustments after each run.

The day was a positive and challenging experience for our students and offered a wealth of inspiration for future projects!
