Student Enrichment

Visual & Performing Arts

At WPGA, we believe the arts are essential to a well-rounded education, fostering creativity, self-expression, and collaboration. Our comprehensive visual arts, theatre and music programs offer students of all levels the chance to explore their talents, develop technical skills, and find their artistic voice. From visual storytelling and architectural design to stage performances and orchestral excellence, our programs inspire and challenge.

Students showcase their creativity at annual events such as theatre productions, concerts, open mic nights, talent shows, and art exhibitions. With guidance from expert educators, each of whom is a professional in their artistic field, students gain the confidence and expertise to pursue the arts, whether as a passion or a future career.

  • AP Music Theory

AP Music Theory corresponds to two semesters of a typical introductory college music theory course, covering topics such as musicianship, theory, musical materials, and procedures. Students develop the ability to recognize, understand, and describe basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. Development of aural skills is a primary objective. Students develop aural, sight-singing, written, compositional, and analytical skills through a series of listening, performance, written, creative, and analytical exercises.

Students who qualify for AP Music Theory will demonstrate a strong understanding of concepts in music theory, equivalent to Royal Conservatory of Music “Intermediate Rudiments” level, or Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 5 Music Theory, through independent or classroom study at this level.
  • AP Studio Art: Drawing

As a prerequisite to this course, students must demonstrate a comfort level with material usage, life-drawing and conceptual approaches. This course has a strong drawing and painting focus, and students will need to create works in a timely manner, as 15 artworks are required to complete this demanding course.

Class time is divided into four segments: Inquiry, Practice, Materials, and Drawing Art and Design. Computer-generated works can also be submitted. This is a discipline-based art education class in which students take an active part in describing, analyzing, interpreting, and judging their artwork and their classmates' work.  Students will also explore postsecondary options.
  • Drafting 11, 12

Students are introduced to design elements and principles through a variety of design planning and drawing projects, independently and in groups. Students build a sequential base of theoretical knowledge of model-making, hand-drafting tools, and computer applications. The SketchUp program is used to create solutions, with emphasis is on critical problem solving and decision making. Students also develop an awareness of how design reflects society and the environment.

Drafting 11 and Drafting 12 courses are offered in alternate years; Drafting 11 investigates smaller scale projects such as interiors and simple structures while Drafting 12 explores larger buildings and exterior finishes.
  • Film & TV 11, 12

Film & Television 11 is encourages students' creativity and develops their technical filmmaking skills, particularly their ability to craft visual narratives. Students learn fundamental skills in three areas: pre-production (screenwriting, storyboarding, planning shooting schedules), production (directing, camera work, blocking), and postproduction (editing, sound design).

Students create short films in small groups and assume various roles, in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Further, students learn to use DSLR cameras and Adobe Premiere Pro CC to edit their films.

In Film & Television 12, the class resembles a production studio. Students create small vignettes to produce a 30-minute film, which is screened to the wider school community at term end. Students act, direct, edit, sound design and record, and should be prepared to meet tight deadlines involving long film shoots after school and in the evening.

Film and TV helps students refine their storytelling voice while building strong critical-thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Jazz Performance 11

This course requires music classes or experience in the jazz ensemble at the grade 10 level (or instructor approval). Jazz Performance 11 is a year-long program of guided independent study in which students develop their performance skills within the jazz idiom on the instrument of their choice.

Fundamental activities include practice and performance in solo and various ensemble situations; covering music from a variety of jazz styles, textures, and historical periods; and cultural influences. Topics for study include jazz harmony and theory, improvisational techniques, transcribing, basic arranging, transposition, and song structure. Performance review, music listening exercises, and ear training skills are emphasized.
  • Media Design 10, 11, 12

Students apply a range of skills to create engaging content for the yearbook, Wolf TV and other projects, honing their skills in interviewing users, prototyping and testing, elements of design, and image-development strategies. Participants gain useful, real-world skills in time management, teamwork and design thinking.
  • Theatre Company 10-12

This class will form the basis of our cast and crew for the annual drama production in March. Students apply for the course by audition for a role or by interview for production crew.

In addition to the production, students enrolled in this course will perform in a devised piece of theatre at year end; those interested in performing in the Vancouver Speech and Drama Festival will receive coaching. Participation in our Remembrance Day assembly performances is encouraged.
